Hanna T. Shannon, founder and designer of eleven eleven, discovered her way to bring our Egyptian culture back in a unique and modern context by opening up to her surroundings while travelling Egypt from North to South, observing the rich diversity of Egyptian traditions, cultures and ways of life.
| ABOUT THE COLLECTION |
”Glitched” FW19 collection has been inspired by modernization, using the macramé knotting technique which is one of the oldest Arabic traditional weaving techniques aging back from the 13th century and denim together.
This collection had limited pieces and was handcrafted by Hana T. Shannon alongside some of Egypt’s finest macramé artisans, combining macramé knotting intricacy and classic denim jackets together futuristically using a variation in color, shade, texture and shape.
| REINCARNATION |
Minya, Egypt, 2019
Far away from the bustling streets of Cairo, in the desert of southern Egypt, enclosed by the mountains, clouds of dust conceal it where no one sees anyone, and going through the same loop every day; the workers look as though they have stepped out of a blizzard, covered in white powder from the daily quarry of stone.
Gasping for air, they patiently toil each and every day beady eyed only to achieve just a little bit, while these communities emphasize cultural heritage, values and traditions. At the quarries in Upper Egypt the equipment used to cut the rocks are usually old, rusty, and unsheathed; Using crowbars, sledgehammers, and other hand tools they square off, pry, and split huge chunks of rock into the right size of brick shape and help get them to where they’re going. Being a quarry worker is a hands-on job where you pit your might and mind against earth itself to move mountains, extracting minerals and raw materials that make society possible. One can’t do it alone, but together they can.
Diversely yet parallel to one another, the ancient art of macramé is one of the oldest crafts in the world. It’s an age-old craft handed down by the Arab culture that’s undergoing a contemporary renaissance. Macramé is a form of textile produced using hand-knotting techniques and it requires a good eye for detail. It can be made by a variety of different materials and gives such an exciting reincarnated form of the chords knotted together attentively for hours resulting in one of a kind beautiful pieces that carry on forever.
Juxtaposing both cultural crafts from hand work, hand cutting, the use of ancient techniques, removing extra material all the way to finishing it up, with a focus on the macramé collection in this context pushes the pieces forward.
eleven eleven’s “Glitched” collection is “the diamond in the rough”, conceptually coming out of the dust of the quarries and literally bringing a one of a kind ethnic collection to life.
