This cake plays with the juxtaposition of the old and the new - modern and historical architecture - through clean geometric shapes versus more organic and decorative structures. Painted motifs showcase sinuous curves iconic in Rococo designs and the painted elements like leaves and scalloped designs are echoed in dimensional forms throughout.
One challenge I came across with this cake was stability. The top tier of the cake/second story of the building is held up partially by wooden dowels hidden inside the bottom tier/first story of the building and by the single column to the right. You'd be surprised at how much engineering goes into the internal structure of some cakes to achieve optimal stability. Thank goodness I paid attention in Physics class!
Medium: Edible coloring on fondant, flowers and leaves in gumpaste, other dimensional elements in fondant
