For this project I wanted to create an advert that I could post to social media without hiring a model and doing a photoshoot. I created mock-ups of the scarves I had designed, drew some characters then created some sea creatures using the little beads I call "tassays" which are the same elements I use to make the scarves. I wanted to convey a sense of playfulness but also a bit of magic. Like that time in childhood when everyday objects are used to tell stories, like flying carpets in Aladdin or magic mirrors like in Alice in Wonderland. So the silk scarf could be used as a sail for a raft or a hammock on a desert island. I drew the girls, the pirate ship and the palm trees but but the shipwreck and whale are stock illustrations from Freepik. I originally made it all white with black lines but it looked a bit more magical with a glittery night sky. I was looking at Ronald Searle's illustrations of St Trinians. This idea of glamour but with impending disaster on the horizon! I've kept the drawings deliberately quite rough and a bit wonky. I was inspired by Victoriana and probably the most inspiring for this project was Child of the Jago which is a fashion brand based in London and renowned for their oversized hats.
