Writing Tutorial: Failsafe Tips to Create the Perfect CV
Learn how to make your CV stand out from the crowd, with Lalolagráfica
Your CV can be the gateway to the job of your dreams... or the reason you’re application is rejected. It doesn’t matter if it’s in hardcopy or digital, your CV is the first thing HR managers use to discard or select candidates. Which is why your CV must represent and recount the best of your professional experience.
So what are the keys to a perfect CV? Graphic designer, illustrator, writer and founder of @lalografica Raquel Marín Álvarez gives you her key tips to make your CV stand out from the crowd. Discover them in the video.
5 Failsafe Tips to Help You Create the Perfect CV
1. Summarize everything on one page
HR managers receive hundreds of CVs every day, so you need to summarize your professional experience in a single page. It’s very important to make clear who’s writing. So your name and basic details should feature in the header. Keep the visual structure of your CV clear to help achieve this. Lalolagráfica recommends using one of the many free templates available online.
2. Use distinctive fonts
Readers can miss important information if you use the same font and same font size throughout your document. Lalolagráfica recommends using bold, italics, capital letters and headings in different font sizes to allow your reader to dip in and out of your document without getting lost.
3. Be clear and concise
Use only the right words to allow the person reading your CV to understand what you’re telling them easily and at a glance.
4. Feature your current position in a title and add a summary
Raquel recommends starting your CV with a heading featuring your position or profession. Then accompany it with a summary of your strengths or relevant personal skills. While the rest of your CV should be clear, concise and objective, this is where you can be creative.
5. Decide whether to structure things chronologically or by milestones
Last but not least, how do you want to organize your information? People generally order their professional experience chronologically. But you can also use career highlights. This is a very useful approach if some of your experience is less strong than others, or if you took a year out, or if there are any ‘gaps’ in your career.
