About the video: Connecting the Letters: Structural Changes
Overview
“Once you’re familiar with the letters on their own, you can move on to the script grammar, which is the way letters combine and how that changes their shape. In this lesson we focus on structural changes, which affect the letters in initial, medial and final positions. For instance, here is how the letter Ha changes in these three positions, in a computer font: ههه. These changes are an essential part of the Arabic alphabet in any style and period. But they don’t necessarily appear on the page in their “raw” state: like the structure of a house, they’re covered over with something more aesthetic. This aesthetic part is the next lesson (Stylistic Ligatures), and I recommend really understanding the structural changes before starting on the stylistic. The script grammar is the most important part of the course to enable you to write words and sentences, and accompanying tasks will include both practice and observation. ”
