João Varela is a lettering artist and type designer based in Lisbon, Portugal. His passion for letters started in his teenage years with graffiti, and he’s since dedicated himself to creating expressive lettering in different mediums and styles. João went on to study graphic design at ESAD in Caldas de Rainha, and a master’s degree in type design at Écal, but also considers himself to be largely self-taught.
He is known for his experimental approach to calligraphy that challenges the traditional methods. As well as collaborating with clients and studios, João is committed to his personal projects, including a self-published book on his creative process. He also documents his work via Instagram.

This is an exciting and unusual approach to calligraphy. The content is well organised, the exercises are easy to follow and understand and the results can be unexpectedly lovely! For once, the English captioning is very good (not always the cases with other courses). The instrructor is engaging and encouraging.

Be advised, you will not learn calligraphy fundamentals in this course. As someone with some experience in writing Calligraphy, I enjoyed seeing new mediums to express ideas and help me to avoid becoming stagnant in the rigidity of the art form. First learn the fundamentals and then learn to stray from them with discipline.

very good course which allows you to free yourself from the strict rules of calligraphy. Possible errors do not confine us, on the contrary allow us to go further. Using Indian ink to calligraphy is a pleasure and calligraphy on a large scale opens up new horizons for us. Bravo for this course, I would happily take another course with this teacher
