The book cover I chose to illustrate is "The Alchemist" by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho. It took me a while to read the book again and do the breakdown. I read it in French.
It is a fiction novel and an international best seller: It's the story of a young shepherd, Santiago who dreams of a distant place he doesn't now where a treasure awaits him. He decides to sell his flock to take the journey from his home village in Andalusia to the Egyptian Pyramids in Africa. Along the way he encounters people and situations that will guide him and teach him to follow his heart, learn the language of the world and discover where the true treasure lies. It's a quest of accomplishment of his Personal Legend.
I did some research of other book covers that were made, just for reference on what has been already done to make sure I wasn't doing something that had already been done, and I chose my own palette for the atmosphere:
The elements I chose for the book covers are Santiago, The Alchemist, the desert, the Oasis and the Pyramids: the first cover is a view of the Oasis, a haven in the desert.
The second one has the hands of Santiago with the two stones of choice to guide him in his journey.
The third one is The Alchemist and his eagle flying off, like Santiago learning his teachings and becoming free.
The initial roughs are made with collage, the technique I usually use to visualise my compositions. Then I hand draw all the elements and the text in the final composition.
