In the project titled, Moving Boxes, I recreate the cardboard fruit boxes found at a local grocery store. This piece is about travel, transport and moving, export and economy- contrasting stitching and embroidery with the mass produced object.
Created on a 1 to 1 scale, these highly decorated moving boxes are made flat. I first unfolded the boxes and traced the box edges and graphic patterns onto water soluble fabric. I then chose thread colours that matched the colours on the original boxes. Then, Iused my sewing machine to shade in the patterns. After that, I dissolved the base fabric using a technique of pinning the embroidery onto foam to make sure it keeps its proportions and shape. After it was dry, I then folded the box back into its three-dimensional form.
