Thank you very much for sharing your Gaby mockup! It is very nice to see a physical mockup, especially in these confined times when it is so difficult to print and test.
I really liked the proposal. I am telling you: the first thing that caught my attention is that you call NO PHOTOS to the photographs you found. And I found it interesting to "turn" them into photos through their re-signification in the book, that is, from the edition that, as I mentioned in the course, is the process through which we create meaning with images. Thinking that a "non-image" changes its status based on its role in the narrative and its association with other images that "complete" it, made me a very powerful metaphor.
It seemed very wise that you use a format similar to that of the family album for this project since what you are doing (although not in chronological order or telling a linear family story) is making "invented" memories that belong to the type of personal narratives that we see in traditional albums. In addition, what we see in the photos is the type of content that we generally see in our albums: celebrations, Christmas, family portraits, photos of our pets, of our house and its rooms and furniture, of trips, etc. I think you achieve some very interesting moments in the sequence where we see many photos on a double page, making the story (s) more complex and suggesting the many different layers or points of view that exist in the different situations of our life. I liked this gesture because it does not idealize the imaginary life of this lady (as family albums tend to do, where we generally only see happy moments) to allow more "real" or less flat moments to slip through, albeit subtly.
I am passionate about the theme of the family album (I teach about it) and, although it seems that it has said it all, there is always a new thread to pull from.
I honestly enjoyed the whole process very much: the theoretical part of the course (I saw many of the videos twice), the selection of photos for this project (I must say, I threw thousands of found photos with which I felt I could not build anything ); the binding of the mockup and lastly, I loved making the video.
Today, after several days of having made the model and letting it "rest"; now I want to put the file together in Indesign, so all the photos look better (can I send it to you in pdf, so you can see it?) and see what happens with that too ... I feel like this is the next step , and later, think about the statement and the title.
The branches of family photography, family photo albums and memories; They are subjects that I am passionate about and even obsess me. Many times I feel that I studied photography and bookbinding because there are parts of my life (and the lives of my relatives) that there are no photos and if there are, no one bothered to take care of them.
